Oregon, Washington, and Alaska exports of edible fishery products, 1992
Abstract
Oregon, Washington, and Alaska (defined in this report as the Pacific Northwest) exports of edible fishery products in 1992 increased 6.5% in quantity over 1991 to 1.56 billion pounds (lb) or 709,750 metric tons (t). The value of these fishery exports increased by 15.9% to $2.57 billion principally due to the 46% increase in salmon exports. In 1992, groundfish exports of $1.1 billion and salmon exports of $891 million accounted for 43.3 and 34.7%, respectively, of the total value of Pacific Northwest fishery exports. The value of Pacific Northwest exports comprised 76.6% of total U.S. edible fishery exports, up slightly from 73% in 1991. In 1992, Pacific Northwest exports were shipped to 38 countries. The top five countries accounted for 95% of the total. Increased trade with Japan, the United Kingdom, and France accounted for most of the gain. Exports to Japan totaled $2.06 billion or 80.2% of the total, up 24% in value from $1.66 billion in 1991. The Republic of Korea remained in the second spot with $127 million or 4.9% of the total exports, down 12.7% from $146 million in 1991. Pacific Northwest exports to the United Kingdom increased to $125.7 million or 4.9% of the total exports, while shipments to Canada were virtually unchanged at $96.7 million from $96 million in 1991 and accounted for 3.8% of the total.
