Oregon, Washington, and Alaska exports of edible fishery products, 1991
Abstract
Oregon, Washington, and Alaska (defined in this report as the Pacific Northwest) exports of edible fishery products in 1991 increased 4% in quantity over 1990 to 1.47 billion pounds (1b) or 666,400 metric tons (t). The value of these fishery exports increased by 7% to $2.2 billion principally due to the 35% increase in groundfish exports and the 21% increase in crab exports. The 25.5% decrease in Pacific salmon exports kept total exports from being higher. In 1991, groundfish exports of $1.07 billion and salmon exports of $612 million accounted for 48.4 and 27.6%, respectively, of the total value of Pacific Northwest fishery exports. This is the first time that groundfish exports surpassed salmon exports. The value of Pacific Northwest exports comprised 72.9% of total U.S. edible fishery exports, down slightly from 74.7% in 1990. In 1991, Pacific Northwest exports were shipped to 35 countries. The top five countries accounted for 92.6% of the total. Increased trade with Japan, the Republic of Korea, the United Kingdom, and Portugal accounted for most of the gain. Exports to Japan totaled $1.66 billion or 74.9% of the total, up in value from $1.61 billion in 1990. The Republic of Korea jumped to the second spot with $146 million or 6.6% of the total exports, up from $94.4 million in 1990. Pacific Northwest exports to the United Kingdom increased to $113.8 million or 5.1% of the total exports, while shipments to Canada fell to $96.4 million from $100 million in 1990 and accounted for 4.3% of the total.
