Description: Environmental Protection and Federally-Supported Grant and Contract Activities

NEPA is the National Environmental Policy Act. The Act “requires Federal agencies to consider the probable environmental consequences of all federally supported activities.” This applies to grants, cooperative agreements, contracts, etc. Federally supported activities can fall under the following levels of NEPA review: 1) Categorical Exclusion, 2) Environmental Assessment (the project must be surveyed for potential impacts), or 3) Environmental Impact Statement. Each grant, cooperative agreement, contract etc must be individually evaluated. The ARRA requires adherence to NEPA and requires a high level of reporting. The purpose of this staff training is to raise awareness of NEPA requirements and to inform staff about how adherence to NEPA can be documented and reported.
