Sample MODIS images acquired over Ross Ice Shelf, Antarctica and an illustration of detection and correction of thin cirrus cloud effects using the 1.38 micron MODIS channel. The left panel shows a color image processed from MODIS channels centered at 0.645 (red), 0.55 (green), and 0.47 micron (blue). A large semi-rectangularly-shaped iceberg (B-15) broken from the Ross Ice Shelf is clearly seen. The white upper right portion of the image is contaminated by cirrus clouds. The middle panel shows the image of the 1.38-micron channel. Cirrus clouds are seen clearly in this image. The right panel shows the cirrus-path-radiance-corrected image. Surface spatial patterns in the upper right portion are seen more clearly after the removal of cirrus scattering effects.
