This course goes beyond the nuts and bolts of recruiting and managing volunteers and focuses on the leadership and effective communication skills necessary to build management support; strategies to build management support for a volunteer program and justify costs; methods of involving refuge staff in utilizing volunteer skills; and creating a positive supportive environment for volunteers. Participants will leave the course with increased skills in leadership and effective communication, engaging staff in planning for volunteer involvement, and motivating volunteers and staff. |

Who Should Attend: |
The course is for people with lead responsibility for a volunteer program. Attendance is limited to those who have completed the Volunteer Recruitment and Management course (OUT8114) or any introduction to volunteer management course. |
Objectives: |
Participants will gain skills to:
- Demonstrate seven communications skills that enhance a person’s ability to lead others;
- Develop a strategic plan for volunteer involvement;
- Justify the benefit and asset of a volunteer program and support the cost;
- List the steps necessary to engage the staff in planning for volunteer involvement and effectively using volunteer skills;
- Identify and implement strategies to remove barriers that limit volunteer involvement.
