Of the millions of men and women in the military who put their lives on the line for the United States every day, many have a substance use disorder in addition to a mental illness. During 2002, approximately 18 percent of military personnel were heavy drinkers of alcohol and 12.3 percent were dependent on alcohol. In addition, roughly 7 percent of military personnel reported using illegal drugs in the past 12 months.
