INTERNATIONAL VISITATION IN NOVEMBER 2006 UP 11 PERCENT

The U.S. Department of Commerce announced that 3.3 million international visitors traveled to the United States in November 2006, an increase of 11 percent over November 2005. International visitors also spent $9.3 billion (travel receipts and passenger fares), up 11 percent. Visitation for the first eleven months of 2006 was up six percent, with spending up four percent year-to-date.

In addition, the following is a summary of top port arrival activity for the first eleven months.

TOP PORTS   January – November 2006

Arrivals to the USA by port-of-entry are tracked on a monthly basis. Department of Commerce has arrival data on more than 40 U.S. ports-of-entry from all world regions and 30 countries.   A brief analysis is presented on the top 15 ports for overseas arrivals during 2006.

Overseas arrivals (which excludes Canada and Mexico) were flat for the first 11 months of 2006. Arrivals through the top 15 ports-of-entry accounted for almost 84 percent of all overseas arrivals, down one percentage point from the top 15 in 2005.

The top three ports of entry (New York JFK, Miami and Los Angeles) accounted for 36 percent of all overseas arrivals, the same market share percentage registered in 2005.

Only six of fifteen ports posted increases in arrivals for the first eleven months of 2006. There was no change in position year-over-year among the top 15 ports.
