A Message From the Safety Civilian Community Leader

Ms. Connie DeWitte, Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Safety, 23 October 2003

To all Navy and Marine Corps Civilian Safety and Occupational Health Professionals:

"As Safety Civilian Community Leader, my intent is to develop a safety community that will take the Navy and Marine Corps into the next generation and carry on for the current workforce. As with the entire Federal workforce, many Department of the Navy civilian safety professionals have retired in recent years. Fifty percent of the Department of the Navy civilian safety workforce will be retirement eligible in the next 10 years.

Our vision is an organized, networked, and supported Department of the Navy safety community to attract, develop, and retain the most talented individuals. Several members of the Naval safety community recently met with civilian personnel community leaders to begin piloting one aspect of the total community program - competency identification. As a part of providing a civilian safety professional with a viable career path, we need to identify the technical and management/leadership skills and abilities needed to do the job successfully.

SkillsNet is the tool we are using to do this piece of the program. Identifying job tasks, skills, and abilities can help both the individual and the organization. For example, it will enable targeted hiring needs, as well as training and development requirements. We are excited to have this opportunity to break ground by piloting SkillsNet for DON civilian communities and providing feedback for all of DON as to its value."
