For quite a few years now, I have been using "exit passes" as a
reflection tool after each class or "weekly reflections." I have used
very basic tools for this if I have lower level learners or more
detailed/complex tools. It also depends on the amount of time you have
for this type of activity.

I have found that in most cases learners in my classes have never had a
"structured" and regular opportunity to consider their attendance,
participation and performance. Many learners who have "moaned and
groaned" about having to do this at first ended up really appreciating
it. Meeting with them to compare their evaluation of themselves with my
evaluation of them has been helpful to them and to me. It also helps me
clear up any misperceptions or misunderstandings of what I thought I was
teaching and what they are learning. This is a great tool to use as a
"jumping off point" for advising sessions with learners, especially GED
learners and learners who are in employment readiness/job skills
training. They often appreciate guidance beyond the skills and
knowledge they are getting in class.

I have attached a variety of different versions I have used with GED,
ABE and ESL learners. I have one other that I have used with beginning
level ESL learners, but it's on my computer at home. If anyone is
interested in that, please email me and I'll get it to you.

Feel free to use as is if appropriate or modify. I'd love to get your
feedback/suggestions if you do incorporate this into your program.
Reflective teaching/learning is a major interest of mine.

Jessie

At this phase of my process I am asking for other questions I
might ask to solicit as much information as possible from my students
about their experiences in the lab. I am asking those of you in the
list for suggestions for other questions I might ask over the next few
weeks, before I implement any changes - or even let them know what the
changes will be. I will be using their responses to generate more
questions.

At the end of most lessons, I ask my students two questions:

What did you learn today? (or what did you learn from today's lesson?)

How will you use what you learned?

Answers are always interesting.
