Nonbeverage Products Laboratory (NPL)

The National Laboratory Center is a state-of-the-art-facility in Beltsville, MD, which houses the Beverage Alcohol, Nonbeverage Products and Tobacco Laboratories. These laboratories provide the Bureau with scientific and technical support.

The Nonbeverage Products Laboratory analyzes and evaluates nonbeverage alcohol products including:

Drawback evaluation
Imported nonbeverage alcohol products for excise tax determination
Specially Denatured Alcohol formula evaluation
Flavor verification for the Advertising, Labeling, and Formulation Division (ALFD) of TTB for flavors used in alcoholic beverages
