Seniors, vets, SSI recipients get stimulus

WASHINGTON - Congresswoman Jackie Speier (San Francisco/San Mateo County) announced that Social Security recipients will soon be receiving a one-time $250 economic stimulus check, provided by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act passed by Congress.  The payments will start going out immediately and all Social Security recipients can expect to receive their check by early June.  In addition, those receiving SSI and federal Railroad Retirement benefits will get a $250 stimulus check later this month and disabled veterans will see their payment in June.

“One of the principle goals of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act was to get money back into the economy as quickly as possible,” Rep. Speier said.  “These stimulus checks for seniors, disabled veterans, SSI recipients and railroad retirees - while not large - will be a welcome boost to so many living on a fixed income and will result in an additional $25 million being pumped into the local economy of the 12th Congressional District.”

The payments will be sent automatically to any individual eligible for benefits from November, 2008 - January 2009.  If receiving more than one benefit from these programs, the person will receive just one $250 payment.

Any qualifying person who does not receive a check by June 15 should contact the Social Security office or Congresswoman Speier’s district office at (650) 342-0300.
