Recovery Act justice funds come to local agencies

Congresswoman Jackie Speier announced this morning that more than $4,000,000 has been allocated for San Francisco and San Mateo Counties by the Justice Department’s Edward Byrne Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program.

“This money will go directly to local governments to help prevent and control crime and improve the criminal justice system,” Congresswoman Speier said.  “This is funding that is immediately injected into our local economy to pay salaries, expand programs and make our streets safer for all of us.  This is just one example of how the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act is working to give Main Street a much-needed boost.”
JAG funds can be used for a variety of crime and justice programs, including law enforcement, prosecution, courts, crime prevention, corrections, drug treatment programs, planning and technology.

San Francisco intends to use its share of the money for targeted law enforcement in areas of high drug, gun and gang activity, increased foot patrols in specific areas and expanding the number of officers in low-income housing developments.  Additionally, SFPD will be able to increase its commitment to juvenile crime prevention – specifically focused on after school activities.

“Historically, crime tends to increase along with economic woes,” Speier pointed out.  “These added funds will help local agencies respond to a growing need for law enforcement while also supplementing programs that deter crime by providing alternatives to young people.”
