March 2009
NERC Certification
March 9-12, 2009
Presented by Operator Educational Services - North America (OES-NA)

This 4-day class is intended to assist system personnel in preparing to take the NERC Certification Exam. The class will begin with an overview and review of interconnected operations from a Balancing, Transmission, and Reliability perspective. Participants will then be taken through the NERC Standards and provided with an explanation of how they relate to real-time operations. The course material is intended to not only cover the specifics of the standards but also to identify their application to real-time operations. The course culminates with a multiple choice exam reflective of the NERC Content Areas as defined in the NERC Content Outline.

Credit Hours:
NERC Total CEHs - 32
NERC Emergency Operations – 32
NERC Standards CEHs - 26
NERC Simulation CEHs - 0

April 2009
Decision Making Skills for System Operators
April 14-15, 2009
Presented by Operator Educational Services - North America(OES-NA)

This 2-day class is intended to provide participants with necessary decision making skills that can be utilized in fulfilling their everyday role in real-time operations. Participants are expected to already possess the basic principles of operating in an interconnected system. The participants will be required to utilize their knowledge of system operations and apply this knowledge while integrating the concepts identified for making decisions. The class has been designed to allow for all lectures to occur in the morning followed by small group decision making exercises throughout the afternoon on both days. Some small group exercises may require the utilization of the Power Simulator system. The situations presented in the exercises will deal with various system events.

Credit Hours:
NERC Total CEHs - 16
NERC Emergency Operations – 16
NERC Standards CEHs - 0
NERC Simulations CEHs - 8

November 2009
Switching and Clearances
November 9-10, 2009
Presented by Operator Educational Services - North America (OES-NA)

This 2-day course is intended to provide system operators with a basic understanding of concepts related to transmission switching of the Bulk Electric System. This course includes various topics related to switching such as Transmission Equipment, Relays, MVA Calculation, Surge Impedance Loading, Ferranti Effect, Make Before Break, Flow Calculations, and various scenarios utilizing the Power Simulator system. The course covers the basics of transmission switching from the daily routine (i.e. prearranged clearances) to the emergency situations that system operators may encounter. The students will be expected to work through basic clearances and switching procedures and also will be required to calculate MVA flows across sectionalizing switches to determine if the switches can be operated safely for various reasons. In addition, the aspects of communications prior to and during switching activities will be discussed to stress the importance of providing clear and concise directives.

Credit Hours:
NERC Total CEHs - 16
NERC Emergency Operations – 16
NERC Standards CEHs - 0
NERC Simulation CEHs - 6
