GIS Re-Designation of Critical Habitat

The most noteworthy project for the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) program was the re-designation of critical habitat for the seven California steelhead and Chinook Evolutionarily Significant Units (ESU).  GIS proved instrumental in this effort from the onset, from the planning stages through the final published products.  GIS provided the necessary link between the information database and the spatial structure of the habitat distribution.  Many aspects of the resulting analysis could not have been conducted without the GIS program.  The project established a collaboration among GIS staff and biologists in the Southwest Region as well as with their counterparts in the Northwest Region.
