SAMHSA Accepting Applications for Expanding the Capacity of "Adult Treatment Drug Courts" Across the Nation (3/6/2009)
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration is accepting applications for adult treatment drug courts - programs that direct defendants and offenders with underlying substance abuse problems to treatment services as an alternative to incarceration. These treatment services include alcohol and drug treatment, recovery support services, screening, assessment, case management, and program coordination.
Levels of Smokeless Tobacco Use Increase among Adolescent Males (3/5/2009)
The levels of current smokeless tobacco use increased significantly among adolescent males (aged 12 to 17) from 3.4 percent in 2002 to 4.4 percent in 2007, according to a report based on a series of nationwide surveys. This report shows that the rate of current use of smokeless tobacco (i.e., use within the past month) among the whole population aged 12 and older has remained relatively stable during the same period (in the range of 3.0 to 3.3 percent).

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) is accepting applications for fiscal year (FY) 2009 for grants to Expand Substance Abuse Treatment Capacity in Targeted Areas of Need-Local Recovery-Oriented Systems of Care. This program is designed to foster the development and utilization of local recovery-oriented systems of care to address gaps in treatment capacity by supporting person-centered and self-directed approaches for substance abuse (including alcohol and drug) treatment and recovery services in communities with serious drug problems.
