All Ages Spend the National Night Out Together to Fight Crime

On August 4th, six of our Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) volunteers served 18 hours assisting with the annual “National Night Out.” This community event provides our entire community with heightened crime and drug prevention awareness; generates support for and participation in local anticrime programs; strengthens neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and sends a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

We had over 350 individuals (from all age groups) attend our “National Night Out.” Besides the educational aspects, the participants are provided with a picnic meal (hot dogs and sodas). The yellow “crimestopper” balloons are a highlight for the children who attend this event. They float in the air as the “signature” of this special event. The children and adults have an opportunity to learn about our fire department, ambulance and police department. Our high school and college football player share their skills with the youth.

The highlight of the evening is registering and waiting to see which girl and boy will win the bikes and helmets donated by a local store. Enjoyable music is provided throughout the evening by a local musician. It a wonderful evening filled with tips on Health, Safety and Security. Throughout the grant year we 73 RSVP volunteers serving 31,000 hours involved with the Neighborhood/Meth Watch Program.
