(Washington, DC) – In an effort to move the nation towards greater energy independence, House Democratic Whip Hoyer, House Science Committee Ranking Democrat Rep. Bart Gordon and House Armed Services Committee Member Rep. Mark Udall submitted an amendment today to the Fiscal Year 2007 Department of Defense Authorization Bill that would increase the use of alternative fuels in the military. The Department of Defense is the largest single buyer of fuel in America and must be a part of any energy independence effort.

(Washington, DC) – As Americans struggle to afford near record high gas prices, Republicans on the House Armed Services Committee rejected a proposal to increase funding for alternative fuels programs at the Department of Defense by $63 million. The committee rejected the alternative fuels amendment offered by Rep. Mark Udall (D-CO) by a vote of 25-30 during debate on a bill to authorize programs at the Defense Department in 2007.
