Hoyer: Republicans Will Push Social Security Privatization

President Shows GOP Not Listening on Social Security

WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today in response to President Bush's comments on CNBC yesterday, in which he reiterated his support for privatizing Social Security:

"Last year, the American people made it very clear that they do not support privatizing Social Security, but President Bush and Republicans are not listening.

"The President's recent comments are proof that Republicans will continue to push for privatization instead of looking for a bipartisan solution to solve this very successful program's challenges.

"Democrats have drawn a line in the sand on this issue.  We want to ensure that Social Security is there for generations to come, but we will not allow Social Security to be privatized.  The American people know that protecting Social Security is one more reason it is time for change in Washington."
