04/17/2009 - Public Meeting with Obama's Transportation Secretary
Transportation Secretary Ray Lahood was in Vermont on Friday April 17th, at the invitation of Senator Bernie Sanders and they conducted a Town Hall Meeting on Rural Transportation with a large group of Vermont transportation stakeholders. Earlier in the day, Secretary LaHood presented the State of Vermont with $6.2 million in stimulus funding for repairs and upgrades to Knapp Airport in Montpelier.
04/16/2009 - Solar School
Senator Bernie Sanders announced today the launch the largest solar energy project at a Vermont public school. The Camels Hump Middle School in Richmond will develop a massive array of solar photovoltaic cells to serve as a statewide model. Sanders secured more than $260,000 to help establish a 75-kilowatt array of solar photovoltaic cells. “This project will not only help Camels Hump Middle School reduce its electric bill and carbon footprint, but will be a major step forward in moving our state toward a greener economy which relies more and more on sustainable energy,” Sanders said.

04/11/2009 - Town Meeting with USCIS Workers
Senator Sanders hosted a town hall meeting to discuss the concerns of contract employees at the Vermont Service Center/US Citizenship and Immigration Services. Over 100 employees attended the meeting and were able to communicate their concerns directly to the Acting Deputy Director of USCIS, Michael Aytes, the US Department of Treasury, and other management personnel from USCIS and Treasury contractors.
04/06/2009 - Volunteer Firefighters and EMS
Sen. Bernie Sanders announced today that he has introduced legislation to strengthen support for the thinning ranks of volunteer firefighters and EMS personnel. Vermont’s 5,600 volunteer firefighters and the nation’s 800,000 volunteer firefighters and emergency medical service personnel “deserve our strong support,” Sanders said today at a news conference at the Shelburne Fire Department. “I want the federal government to be a partner in community efforts to keep our volunteer fire departments fully staffed and ready to respond when needed.” The tradition of emergency responder volunteerism is “in danger of weakening and possibly even dying out,” according to the Department of Homeland Security. Nationwide, the ranks of volunteer firefighters have dropped more than 10 percent from their peak in 1984.
04/05/2009 - Vermont State Chapter of the National Association of Letter Carriers
Senator Sanders spoke about the economy to letter carriers from around the state at the annual conference of the Vermont State Chapter of the National Association of Letter Carriers this past Sunday. Senator Bernie Sanders welcomed Tamari Kashibadze (left) and Anzhela Mashakada (right) to his office in Washington, DC. The high school students are studying in Vermont for the year as part of the Future Leaders Exchange (FLEX) Program. FLEX, a program administered by the U.S. Department of State, provides opportunities for high school students (ages 15-17) to spend a year in the United States, living with a host family and attending an American high school. The goal of the program is to promote long-lasting peace and mutual understanding between the U.S. and countries of Eurasia. Tamari, from Georgia, and Anzhela, from Ukraine, talked with Senator Sanders about their educational experiences in the United States.
03/16/2009 - Funding for Child Care
Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) announced today “a very significant increase” in funding for child care and Head Start in Vermont and throughout the country. “Without strong early childhood educational opportunities for our children, kids will continue to drop out of school, continuing the cycle of poverty. The comprehensive services these programs provide can break that cycle,” Sanders said. The economic stimulus package that Congress recently passed includes $2.1 billion for the Head Start, enough to double the number of infants and toddlers served by the Early Head Start program. For a separate Child Care Development Block Grant, Congress set aside an additional $2 billion, a 50 percent increase over former President Bush’s last budget. To read more click here

Senator Bernie Sanders announced a $5 million grant for the Vermont National Guard that could result in the largest solar energy project in the state and one of the largest in New England. "This project will not only help the Vermont National Guard reduce its electric bill and carbon footprint, but will be a major step forward in moving our state toward a greener economy which relies more and more on sustainable energy," Sanders said. "There is little doubt in my mind that in the years to come the energy mix in this state will be very different than it is today - with a far greater reliance on sustainable energy.
