Impact of the CATIE findings on state mental health policy.

Medical directors of state mental health agencies present the effects of the Clinical Antipsychotic Trials of Intervention and Effectiveness (CATIE) on state mental health policy and make recommendations for future state policies in light of the CATIE findings.  The authors argue that CATIE results demonstrated that state mental health agencies were often overemphasizing second generation anti-psychotics and suggest that CATIE results dictate a more nuanced approach to antipsychotic medication utilization including one that optimizes first-generation antipsychotics.
