This analysis of autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) demonstrates that cost per patient is rising and that per patient cost for ASDs is higher than for other mental disorders. Currently, ASDs account for a relatively small share of insurance expenditures because ASDs are relatively infrequently treated; however, the authors note that earlier identification and better treatment will cause ASDs’ overall share of healthcare expenditure to increase in the future.
