Sample Coverage and Dataset Characteristics: A public health surveillance system that monitors drug-related hospital emergency department (ED) visits and drug-related deaths to track the impact of drug use, misuse, and abuse in the U.S.
Key Variables: Drug-related hospital emergency department visits and drug-related deaths. DAWN includes all types of drugs: illegal drugs of abuse; prescription and over-the-counter medications; dietary supplements; non-pharmaceutical inhalants; alcohol in combination with other drugs (adults and children); alcohol alone (age < 21).
