This article analyzes trends in the prescription of alcohol and opioid dependence drugs.  The study finds that both alcohol and opioid dependence medication prescriptions increased dramatically between 2003 and 2007, paying specific attention to the introduction of new drugs into the market.  However, the authors note that overall substance abuse medication utilization is small relative to the population of potential users and the prospects for future growth are unclear.
