SUPPMEMENTAL POLICY OF THE
NATIONAL CANCER INSTITUTE FOR
INSTITUTIONAL NATIONAL RESEARCH SERVICE AWARDS (T32)

NOTICE

Release Date:

P.T.

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) announces supplemental policies to the general guidelines of the National Institutes of Health for Institutional National Research Service Awards or T32 Grants.

These policies denote the special provisions and requirements of that govern the NCI's use and management of the T32 grant mechanism and delineates the peer review criteria used in evaluating the merit of applications. The NCI does not use the T32 for short-term research training or prebaccalaureate training, asks that grant applicants focus their applications primarily on the training of postdoctoral candidates, requires that there be a reasonable cancer focus to the research support of the mentors who participate in the training program, and asks that grantees provide didactic experiences to trainees that broadly orient them to cancer research and cancer diseases. The NCI also takes an active role in working with grantees to improve their recruitment of under-represented minority and ethnic groups into T32 training programs. In the peer review of T32 applications, the NCI asks peer reviewers to assess the qualifications of the principal investigator/program leader; the special characteristics of the program that help it achieve its stated objectives; the quality of the faculty and their cancer orientation; the recruitment, selection and track record of trainees; and the training resources and environment.
