Invasive nonindigenous species are important because they threaten native communities, alter habitats, and can have significant economic impacts. In aquatic environments, invasive species can be especially noxious because native species have few options for escaping direct interactions such as predation and competition for habitat and food. This website links to an overview of the Nonindigenous Aquatic Species Program (NAS), with links to the database, the NAS Alert System, news, a hotline number for reporting Nonindigenous Aquatic Species, the 2007 NAS database flier, and region 4 and 5 summary reports. Also linked on this resource is an overview of fish, mollusks and crustaceans and aquatic plants, with information on distribution, species profiles, identification, photo galleries, videos and FAQs.
