Drug Free Communities”
Connecting Communities for Spring Branch Youth

                                    Tuesday, November 11, 2008
                                           2:00 – 3:30 pm
                                       United Way Building
50 Waugh Drive, Houston, TX 77007

                                                Program

We will be discussing the Drug Free Communities Program grant that the Coalition recently received from the Office of National Drug Control Policy. Why? Because we need everyone’s help to make the program a success! This is where the rubber meets the road in Coalitions. Members work together for the greater good which, paradoxically, leads to greater good for the members!

Our guests will include the evaluation team for our Program, and they will demonstrate how to implement meaningful strategies and collect relevant data to make and show progress toward the achievement of program outcomes. I have met with Dr. Trevino and Mr. Valdez, and it is fascinating to learn from them the myriad ways and means of obtaining relevant, meaningful data. You will find this session helpful in your own work too, as you think about how to accomplish important goals for the benefit of those you serve.

Ray Andrews, Director of the Houston-Harris County Office of Drug Policy, will also be our guest. Mr. Andrews will give us a report on the “2008 Houston-Harris County Regional Drug Summit: The Urgency of Now!” which was designed as a springboard to continued dialogue, decision-making, and action to address the substance abuse epidemic in our region. Mr. Andrews will share how we will be working to maintain the momentum of the Summit over the next year and more. Please join us!

Refreshments provided by The Coalition of Behavioral Health Services!

  All,

Link to an update on the Coalition activities for the period August 19-October 13, 2008.

Our meeting last Tuesday, October 14th was eye-opening! It seems the possibilities of web-based technologies to supplement our work in substance abuse prevention, treatment, and recovery have only begun to be tapped. And, thank you all for your helpful comments and suggestions about the Coalition website.

I am especially fascinated by the notion of virtual worlds being utilized to help people in recovery learn the skills necessary to live differently in their natural environments. The ideas in the attached report from a meeting funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's Pioneer Portfolio are thrilling to imagine, especially with regard to youth and young adults who are familiar and comfortable with Internet-based social networking and engagement in virtual worlds.
