City Hosts Russian Women Leaders

In Russia, where old habits notoriously die hard, women business leaders are a rarity indeed.
As part of an effort to change that, a five-person delegation of Russian women arrived in Jacksonville Wednesday. Part of the Congress-sponsored Open World Program managed by the Center for Russian Leadership Development, an independent agency located at the Library of Congress, they will spend a week in Jacksonville, sightseeing, attending seminars and exchanging ideas with local women in positions of power.
The women, all of whom are visiting the United States for the first time, arrived in Jacksonville following a stay in Washington, D.C.
The group includes a teacher at the Higher School of Economics in Moscow, a specialist with a municipal services center in St. Petersburg, a member of the board of directors of an exhibition and shopping center in Rostov, a region in southwestern Russia bordering Ukraine and the director of cultural programs for a Jewish charitable foundation in Perm, a region on the western side of the Ural Mountains.
During a visit Thursday with Audrey Moran, Mayor John Delaney's chief of staff, they agreed through an interpreter that what has impressed them most about the U.S. is "how comfortable it is." That's been true, not just of accommodations, but of "everything," said Ygeniya Tsart, director of cultural programs for the Jewish charitable foundation.
As part of their stay, they will also meet with members of the City Council, spend a day at the University of North Florida, tour the Women's Center, visit the College of Business Administration, participate in a leadership training seminar, visit Hubbard House, tour Shands Hospital and participate in a roundtable with representatives of voluntary organizations.
In addition, they will visit the Jacksonville Museum of Modern Art, the Florida Ballet, and the Florida Theatre.
