Substance use disorders are widespread throughout many facets of society, including among adults and youths involved in the justice and corrections systems. While treatment for substance use disorders is cost effective, when untreated, these disorders can have a negative impact on state resources, families, and the entire community. A study of the nation’s prison population found that while only one-fifth of state prisoners were incarcerated for a drug offense, 83 percent reported past drug use, 57 percent were using drugs in the month prior to their offense, and 37 percent were drinking at the time of their offense. In spite of these trends, recovery is possible for people in the justice system, and those who are looking for it can achieve it.
