Iowa State Profile and Resources

Known as the Hawkeye State, Iowa was the 29th state admitted to the Union in 1846. It is bordered by two major rivers - the Missouri to the west and the Mississippi to the east. Agriculture is an mainstay of the Iowa economy. It is number one in the country for corn, soybean, egg and pork production. The state is 55,869 square miles (25th in the nation), 89% of which is farmland. The population of Iowa is approximately 3 million, 30th in the country. Its capital is Des Moines.
