About NBCH
NBCH's Priorities as a CDC Grantee
NBCH's Accomplishments
The National Business Coalition on Health (NBCH) is a CDC business cooperative agreement grantee, currently in year 2 of a 5-year agreement started in 2007. NBCH has been a business grantee since the late 1990s, with a series of cooperative agreements.
NBCH is a national, non-profit membership organization of employer-based healthcare coalitions founded in 1994. Andrew Webber is NBCH's current president and CEO.
NBCH and its members are dedicated to value-based purchasing of healthcare services, through the collective action of public and private purchasers. NBCH seeks to accelerate the nation's progress toward safe, efficient, high-quality healthcare and the improved health status of the American population.
NBCH has a membership of nearly 60 member coalitions across the United States, representing over 7,000 employers and approximately 25 million employees and their dependents. These business coalitions are composed of mostly mid- and large-sized employers in the private and public sectors in a particular city, county, or region.
NBCH member coalitions are committed to Community Health Reform, including improvement in the value of healthcare provided through employer-sponsored health plans and to the entire community. NBCH provides expertise, resources, a voice to its member coalitions across the country and represents each community coalition at the national level. As a "coalition of coalitions," NBCH spreads the tenets and practical applications of Community Health Reform.
Community Health Partnerships Tools and Information*
The Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO), the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO), and NBCH/Community Coalitions Health Institute (CCHI), in partnership with CDC and the Alliance to Make US Healthiest, are all working together at the national level to emulate and support the vision for Community Health Partnerships (CHPs) across the United States. Tools and information are targeted to aid relationship building of public health officials with business-led coalitions to begin, enhance and sustain CHPs.
Diabetes Seed Grant Program*
NBCH initiated a Diabetes Seed Grant Program with 14 member coalitions in January 2008. Each coalition will develop programs to improve the quality of diabetes care and prevention at the community level and evaluate the impact of the program. This will also include efforts to address complications of diabetes and heart disease.
eValue8™*
The leading evidence-based request-for-information tool, eValue8™, is widely used by business health coalitions, their purchaser members and national employers to assess and manage the quality of their healthcare vendors. eValue8™ raises the bar for healthcare performance and moves the market to deliver greater value for the purchaser's healthcare dollar. Subject-matter experts from CDC contribute to the content for eValue8™. Additionally, NBCH issued the National eValue8TM Report on Health Plan Diabetes Performance that outlines how employers can support employees with diabetes care, while controlling costs.
Health Risk Appraisals (HRA) at the Worksite: Basics for HRA Decision Making
Developed in conjunction with CDC, this publication is designed to provide guidance for decision makers in the selection and use of HRAs at the worksite.
NBCH Member Case Studies: Business-Led Coalitions Working with Public Health*
NBCH has compiled a number of case studies that provide examples of its coalition members working with public health.
NBCH Member Inventory*
In 2008, in collaboration with ASTHO and NACCHO, NBCH developed an inventory of coalition collaborations with state and local public health organizations. This inventory and the follow-up interviews sought to measure the strength of existing relationships between coalitions and public health, gauge the level of interest in building new coalition and public health relationships, and identify techniques and strategies that had worked in early adopter communities that could be beneficial in matchmaking coalitions and public health in other communities. The report describes the inventory process and questions, responses and findings, and conclusions for future actions by NBCH/CCHI and its partners to promote and develop Community Health Partnerships.
