The OSHA and SkillsUSA Alliance will focus on providing career and technical
educators and their students with materials, guidance, and access to training resources that will
impact the occupational safety and health of young workers. The Alliance's goals include:
Outreach and communication:
- Work with OSHA to provide expertise in developing information for young workers on workplace
hazard recognition and prevention and to provide expertise in developing ways of communicating
such information (e.g. print and electronic media, on-line forums, lesson plans, electronic
assistance tools and OSHA's and SkillsUSA's web sites) to educators, employers and young workers.
- Speak, exhibit, or appear at OSHA's and SkillsUSA's conferences state and chapter events, such
the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference and SkillsUSA Championships.
- Work with other Alliance Program participants on specific issues and projects regarding young
workers that are addressed and developed through the Alliance Program.
- Encourage SkillsUSA to build relationships with OSHA's Regional and Area Offices and other
Career Technical Student Organizations to address young worker safety and health issues.
Promoting the national dialogue on workplace safety
and health:
- Convene or participate in forums, round table discussions, or stakeholder meetings on young
worker safety and health issues to help forge innovative solutions in the workplace.

- May 3-9, 2009:
2009 North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week. The
SkillsUSA and more than 55 other Alliance Program participants supported 2009
NAOSH Week. Sponsored annually by the American Society of Safety Engineers, an
Alliance Program participant, and the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering,
the Week focuses on the importance of preventing injuries and illnesses in the
workplace. The theme for 2009 NAOSH Week was "Safety Means Always Coming Home."
- October 20-26, 2008:
2008 Drug-Free Work Week. SkillsUSA and a number of other Alliance Program
participants supported the 2008 Drug-Free Work Week. Sponsored annually by the
U.S. Department of Labor’s
Working Partners for an Alcohol- and Drug-Free Workplace Program, the Week
focused on educating employers, employees and the public about the importance
of being drug-free as an essential component of a safe and healthful workplace.
- June 23-27, 2008: National Leadership and Skills Conference, Kansas City, Missouri.
- June 25, 2008: Edwin G. Foulke, Jr., former-Assistant Secretary, USDOL-OSHA, gave a presentation at
the Special Joint Delegate Session.
- June 26, 2008: Edwin G. Foulke, Jr., former-Assistant Secretary, USDOL-OSHA, gave a presentation,
"OSHA Update and the OSHA and SkillsUSA Alliance," at the Official SkillsUSA Championships
Ribbon Cutting Ceremony.
- June 24-26, 2008: OSHA staffed an Alliance Program exhibit booth and distributed information on the OSHA and SkillsUSA Alliance and the agency's compliance assistance activities during the conference.
- May 4-10, 2008:

- April 21, 2008: Teen Summer Job Safety Campaign Kick-off, Rockefeller Plaza, New York, New
York. Former-U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao kicked off the OSHA national 2008 Teen Summer Job
Safety Campaign during an appearance on NBC's TODAY show. In addition, the event on Rockefeller
Plaza featured a
presentation by former-Assistant Secretary of Labor for Occupational
Safety and Health Edwin G. Foulke, Jr. Representatives from Alliance Program
participants, SkillsUSA, Independent Electrical Contractors, Inc. and National
Association of Home Builders, also attended the event which included SkillsUSA
students demonstrating safe work practices for some of the most common tasks
that teens may encounter in summer jobs. Sponsored by OSHA, the Teen Summer Job
Safety Campaign is a multi-year project to increase awareness about workplace
hazards and provide information about the hazards to young workers and their
parents.

SkillsUSA's
magazine includes an
article, "Putting the Commitment to Safety in Writing," highlighting the Alliance that OSHA the
organization signed on signed October 17, 2005.
