Through the OSHA and ERC Alliance, the organizations will work together to
provide the association's members and others, including small businesses, with information,
guidance, and access to training resources that will help them protect employees' health and safety
associated with the management of municipal solid waste, especially related to hauler safety. In
particular, OSHA and ERC will promote the annual Hauler Safety Campaign: "Safety – Do It for Life."
Further, OSHA and ERC will work together to reduce and prevent exposure to electrical hazards in
waste to energy facilities. The Alliance's goals include:
Outreach and communication:
- Work with OSHA to provide expertise in developing information on the recognition and prevention
of workplace hazards, and to provide expertise in developing ways of communicating such information
(e.g. print and electronic media, electronic assistance tools and OSHA's and the
ERC's Web sites)
to employers and employees in the industry.
- Share information among OSHA personnel and industry safety and health professionals regarding
ERC's best practices or effective approaches and publicize results through outreach by
ERC and
through OSHA- or ERC- developed materials, training programs, workshops, seminars, and lectures
(or any other applicable forum including outreach events).
Promoting the national dialogue on workplace safety and health:
- Convene or participate in forums, round table discussions, or stakeholder meetings on
waste-to-energy worker safety and health issues, waste hauler health and safety issues, and
contractor health and safety issues, to help forge innovative solutions in the workplace or to
provide input on safety and health issues.

- State Campaign Kick-off Events were held at a number of Covanta Energy,
Onyx, Veolia ES Waste-to-Energy, Wheelabrator Technologies, waste-to-energy
facilities.
- May 18-20, 2009: North American Waste-to-Energy Conference,
Chantilly, Virginia.
- May 19, 2009: Elizabeth Way, Director, Office of Outreach Services and
Alliances, Directorate of Cooperative and State Programs, USDOL-OSHA, gave a
presentation "OSHA's Compliance Assistance and Industry Issues Update" to
waste-to-energy professionals.
- May 3-9, 2009: 2009 North American Occupational Safety and
Health Week. The Energy Recovery Council and more than 55 other Alliance
Program participants supported 2009 NAOSH Week. Sponsored annually by the
American Society of Safety Engineers, an Alliance Program participant,
and the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering, the Week focuses on the
importance of preventing injuries and illnesses in the workplace. The theme for
2009 NAOSH Week was “Safety Means Always Coming Home.”

- May 19, 2008: Edwin G. Foulke, Jr., former-Assistant Secretary, USDOL-OSHA;
gave the keynote presentation, "OSHA Adds Value to Business, Work and Life"
to 300 waste to energy professionals.
- May 20, 2008: Lee Anne Jillings, then-Director, Office of Outreach
Services and Alliances, Directorate of Cooperative and State Programs,
USDOL-OSHA, and ERC representatives gave a presentation, "OSHA Update:
OSHA's Compliance Assistance and Industry Issues Update" to waste-to-energy
professionals.
- May 4-10, 2008:
2008 North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week. The Integrated Waste Services
Association and a number of other Alliance Program participants supported 2008 NAOSH Week, "Safety
is Good Business." Sponsored annually by American Society of Safety Engineers and the Canadian
Society of Safety Engineering, the Week focuses on the importance of preventing injuries and
illnesses in the workplace.
- November 27, 2007: Wheelabrator's 5th Annual Contractor Safety Summit, Providence, Rhode
Island.
- Maryann Medeiros, Compliance Assistance Specialist, Region I, Providence, Rhode Island Area
Office, USDOL-OSHA, gave a presentation, "Industrial Health and Health Items Related to
Contracted Work."
- August 27-30, 2007: 23rd Annual National Voluntary Protection Programs Participants'
Association Conference, Washington, DC.
- August 29, 2007: Lee Anne Jillings, then-Director, Office of Outreach
Services and Alliances, Directorate of Cooperative and State Programs,
USDOL-OSHA, and ERC representatives gave a presentation, "Safety Campaign on
a National Scale: Building a Successful Safety Campaign" on the Hauler Safety
Campaign: "Safety Do It for Life," the Alliance Program and other activities
of the OSHA and ERC Alliance, to 50 attendees.
- May 21 – June 28, 2007:

National and State Campaigns.
- June 13, 2007: Hauler Safety Campaign Kick-off Ceremony, Covanta Energy
Inc., Waste to Energy Facility, Lorton, Virginia. C. Bryan Little,
former-Deputy Assistant Secretary, USDOL-OSHA, gave a presentation on the
Alliance Program and the activities of the OSHA/ERC Alliance, including the
Hauler Safety Campaign, to 50 attendees during the kick-off ceremony for
national and state Hauler Safety Campaigns.

- Safety: Do It For Life. Through the OSHA and Energy Recovery Council (ERC)
Alliance, ERC developed "Hauler Safety Campaign, Safety: Do It For Life." The
annual campaign educates public and private waste haulers, municipal and
private owners and operators, and facility employees about best practices on
tipping floor safety. It also encourages the men and women who haul and
dispose of solid waste to focus on their safety practices and their families’
and friends’ well-being as they do their jobs.
