Crane, Hoist and Monorail Alliance

The OSHA and CMAA, HMI and MMA Alliance focuses on
providing crane, hoist and monorail systems owners and operators in general
industry and construction with information, guidance, and access to training
resources that will help them protect employees' health and safety, including
Spanish-speaking, and other high-risk or vulnerable "hard-to-reach" employees,
particularly in reducing and preventing exposure to safety and health issues
such as electrical hazards, falls from elevations or being struck by moving
equipment. The Alliance's goals include:
Outreach and communication:
- Work with OSHA to provide expertise in developing information on the
recognition and prevention of workplace hazards, and to provide expertise in
developing ways of communicating such information (e.g. print and electronic
media, electronic assistance tools and OSHA's and the CMAA, HMI, and MMA Web
sites) to employers and employees in the industry.
- Speak, exhibit, or appear at OSHA's or CMAA, HMI, and MMA conferences,
local meetings, or other events such as the NA2008 (North American Material
Handling & Logistics Show and Conference), ProMat 2009 and the Material
Handling Industry of America (MHIA) Annual Membership Meetings.
Promoting the national dialogue on workplace safety and health:
- Develop and disseminate case studies illustrating the business value of
safety and health and publicize their results.

- May 3-9, 2009:
2009 North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week. The Crane,
Hoist and Monorail Alliance and more than 55 other Alliance Program
participants supported 2009 NAOSH Week. Sponsored annually by the American
Society of Safety Engineers, an Alliance Program participant, and the Canadian
Society of Safety Engineering, the Week focuses on the importance of preventing
injuries and illnesses in the workplace. The theme for 2009 NAOSH Week was
"Safety Means Always Coming Home."
- January 12-15, 2009: ProMat 2009, Chicago, Illinois.
- Ryan Tremain, Alliance Exhibits Coordinator, Office of Outreach Services
and Alliances, Directorate of Cooperative and State Programs, USDOL-OSHA,
staffed the OSHA and Crane, Hoist, and Monorail Alliance Program exhibit booth.
- May 4-10, 2008:

- May 5, 2008: Donald Shalhoub, Deputy Assistant Secretary, USDOL-OSHA; and
Michael Thompson, then-President, ASSE; were the keynote speakers. Mr. Shalhoub
presented "Safety is Good Business" to OSHA and Alliance Program participants
and other safety and health representatives.
- March 10-12, 2008: 2008 Material Handling Institute of America (MHIA) Spring Meeting,
Charlotte, North Carolina.
- F. Hal Vandiver, Executive Vice President, MHIA, delivered an update on the OSHA and Crane,
Hoist and Monorail Alliance to 245 people at the MHIA spring meeting.
- January 8-11, 2007: ProMat 2007, Chicago, Illinois.
- Lee Anne Jillings, then-Director, Office of Outreach Services and
Alliances, Directorate of Cooperative and State Programs (DCSP), USDOL-OSHA;
Jess McCluer, then-Program Analyst, Office of Outreach Services and
Alliances, DCSP, USDOL-OSHA; William Coulehan, Compliance Assistance
Specialist, Region V, Calumet City, Illinois Area Office, USDOL-OSHA; Jerry
Vestal, then-Safety Specialist, Region V, Calumet City, Illinois Area Office,
USDOL-OSHA; and Mark Blakemore, Safety Engineer, Region V, Calumet City,
Illinois Area Office, USDOL-OSHA; staffed the OSHA and Crane, Hoist and
Monorail Alliance Program exhibit booth.
- September 16-20, 2006: MHIA 2006 Annual Membership and Product Sections & Councils Meetings,
Scottsdale, Arizona.
- September 18-19, 2006: Paula White, then-Director, Directorate of
Cooperative and State Programs, USDOL-OSHA, updated the Alliance's
associations on the OSHA and Crane, Hoist and Monorail Alliance and the
Agency's cooperative programs and compliance assistance resources.

- Fact Sheet No. 1: Proper Inspection and Maintenance of Overhead Cranes and Hoists [DOC* - 94 KB]. Through the OSHA and Crane, Hoist and Monorail Alliance, the Crane, Hoist and Monorail participants developed "Fact Sheet No. 1: Proper Inspection and Maintenance of Overhead Cranes and Hoists." The Fact Sheet provides information for employers and employees on standards, reference manuals and safety tips for the application and operation of overhead material handling equipment. - Fact Sheet No. 2: Hoists, Cranes, Pullers - Safety & Warning Labels and Test Certification [DOC* - 89 KB]. Through the OSHA and Crane, Hoist and Monorail Alliance, the Crane, Hoist and Monorail participants developed "Fact Sheet No. 2: Hoists, Cranes, Pullers – Safety & Warning Labels Test Certification." The Fact Sheet provides information to employers and employees concerning items that operators and inspectors need to know when purchasing, installing or using hoist, crane and puller equipment. - Safety Tips Sheet No. 1: Proper Use of Hand Signals for Cab-Controlled Cranes [DOC* - 300 KB]. Through the OSHA and Crane, Hoist and Monorail Alliance, the Crane, Hoist and Monorail participants developed "Safety Tips Sheet No. 1: Proper Use of Hand Signals for Cab-Controlled Cranes." The Tips Sheet provides information for employees regarding nine industry standard hand signals that are used for communication between the operator in the crane’s cab and the floor person. - Safety Tips Sheet No. 2: Pre-Operational Equipment Check of Cranes and Hoists [DOC* - 82 KB]. Through the OSHA and Crane, Hoist and Monorail Alliance, the Crane, Hoist and Monorail participants developed "Safety Tips Sheet No. 2: Pre-Operational Equipment Check of Cranes and Hoists." The Tips Sheet provides information for employees regarding a pre-operational equipment checklist for cranes and hoists. (2006, September)
- Safety Tips Sheet No. 3: Safe Lifting Practices [DOC* - 87 KB]. Through the OSHA and Crane, Hoist and Monorail Alliance, the Crane, Hoist and Monorail participants developed "Safety Tips Sheet No. 3: Safe Lifting Practices." The Tips Sheet provides information for employees regarding safe lifting practices for moving loads of material. (2006, September)
- Safety Tips Sheet No. 4: Hoist Operation [DOC* - 87 KB]. Through the OSHA and Crane, Hoist and Monorail Alliance, the Crane, Hoist and Monorail participants developed "Safety Tips Sheet No. 4: Hoist Operation." The Tips Sheet provides information for employees on what an operator should and should not do while operating a hoist. (2006, September)

- e-Mhove, September 2006. This edition of MHIA's
monthly publication includes an article, "OSHA Alliance Information and
Resources Now Available On-line," which describes the goals of the agreement
and the specific section of the MHIA Web page that promotes the OSHA and Crane,
Hoist and Monorail.
