OSHA and AAOHN will work together to provide AAOHN members and others, including large and small businesses with information, guidance, and access to training resources particularly in addressing workplace hazard preparedness and security issues, such as workplace violence, musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), bloodborne pathogens (BBP) and personal protective equipment (PPE). The goals of the Alliance include:

Outreach and communication:
  • Work with OSHA to provide expertise in developing information on the recognition and prevention of workplace hazards, and to provide expertise in developing ways of communicating such information (e.g. print and electronic media, electronic assistance tools and OSHA's and the AAOHN's Web sites) to employers and employees in the industry.
  • Speak, exhibit, or appear at OSHA's or AAOHN's conferences, local meetings, or other events such as the annual AAOHN Symposium and Expo.
  • Work with other Alliance participants on specific issues and projects including workplace hazard preparedness and security issues, such as workplace violence, MSDs, BBP and PPE, in the workplace that are addressed and developed through the Alliance Program.
Promoting the national dialogue on workplace safety and health:
  • Convene or participate in forums, round table discussions, or stakeholder meetings on healthcare issues to help forge innovative solutions in the workplace or to provide input on safety and health issues.

  • May 3-9, 2009: 2009 North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week. The American Association of Occupational Health Nurses (AAOHN) and more than 55 other Alliance Program participants supported 2009 NAOSH Week. Sponsored annually by the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE), an Alliance Program participant, and the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering (CSSE), the Week focuses on the importance of preventing injuries and illnesses in the workplace. The theme for 2009 NAOSH Week was "Safety Means Always Coming Home."
    • May 4, 2009: Karen M Vesterby, RN, BSN, COHN-S/CM, AAOHN, attended the NAOSH Week Kick-off event at the U.S. Department of Labor in Washington, DC. Acting Assistant Secretary Jordan Barab, USDOL-OSHA; Warren Brown, President, ASSE; and Andrew Cooper, Secretary, CSSE; provided brief remarks. The Kick-off also featured an Alliance Program participant panel with presentations from Alliance Program participants American Heart Association, ASSE, Independent Electrical Contractors, and National Safety Council focusing on workplace safety and health issues.
  • April 21-22, 2009: AAOHN 2009 Symposium & Expo, Orlando Convention Center, Orlando, Florida.
    • Sandra Khan, Safety and Occupational Health Specialist, Office of Outreach Services and Alliances, Directorate of Cooperative and State Programs, USDOL-OSHA, and Renee Tajudeen, Working Partners Program Coordinator, Working Partners for an Alcohol- and Drug-Free Workplace, Office of the Assistant Secretary for Policy, USDOL, staffed the Alliance Program exhibit booth during the conference.
  • October 20-26, 2008: 2008 Drug-Free Work Week. The American Association of Occupational Health Nurses and a number of other Alliance Program participants supported the 2008 Drug-Free Work Week. Sponsored annually by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Working Partners for an Alcohol- and Drug-Free Workplace Program, the Week focused on educating employers, employees and the public about the importance of being drug-free as an essential component of a safe and healthful workplace.
  • May 4-10, 2008: 2008 North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week. The American Association of Occupational Health Nurses and a number of other Alliance Program participants supported 2008 NAOSH Week, "Safety is Good Business." Sponsored annually by American Society of Safety Engineers and the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering, the Week focuses on the importance of preventing injuries and illnesses in the workplace.
    • May 5, 2008: Representatives of the American Association of Occupational Health Nurses attended the NAOSH Week Kick-off event at the U.S. Department of Labor. Donald Shalhoub, Deputy Assistant Secretary, USDOL-OSHA; and ASSE’s then-President, Michael Thompson; were the keynote speakers. Mr. Shalhoub presented "Safety is Good Business" to OSHA and Alliance Program participants and other safety and health representatives.
  • April 28-30, 2008: AAOHN 2008 Symposium & Expo, Salt Palace Convention Center, Salt Lake City, Utah.
    • Brett Besser, Industrial Hygienist, Ergonomist, Salt Lake Technical Center, Directorate of Technical Support and Emergency Management, USDOL-OSHA staffed an Alliance Program exhibit booth during the symposium.

  • Workplace Violence in Healthcare Quick Tip card [PDF* - 306 KB]. Through the OSHA and American Association of Occupational Health Nurses Alliance, AAOHN developed "Workplace Violence in Healthcare Quick Tip card." The card provides tips on workplace violence prevention, response, recovery and the role of the supervisor. (2009, Spring)
  • Violence Prevention in Healthcare ID Card [PDF* - 139 KB].  Through the OSHA and American Association of Occupational Health Nurses Alliance, AAOHN developed "Violence Prevention in Healthcare ID Card." The wallet size card provides tips on the recognition and response to workplace violence incidents. (2009, Spring)
