Modeling Plant Species Distribution

PIERC Project Leader: James D. Jacob, Ph.D.

Distribution of native loulu plam and alien tree Miconia on island of Hawaii Objectives:
Star  Compile existing data on the location and habitat characteristics of native and invasive plants
Star  Model the potential distribution of each of the target taxa on the island of Hawai`i using GIS tools

Accomplishments:
Star  The distributions of approximately 150 species of invasive plants have been modeled
Star  Historic range for the entire native plant flora has been projected based on habitat characteristics from known locations of the plants

Significance:
Star  The invasive species potential distribution maps will aid with developing control strategies
Star  Historic range maps for native species will aid restoration and reintroduction programs for these species
