Koa Wilt and Dieback

Acacia koa stand suffering from Koa Wilt Objectives:
Star  Discover the cause of dieback
Star  Determine how disease is spread
Star  Determine whether disease agent is native or introduced
Star  Evaluate control options if warranted


Accomplishments:
Star  A fungus (Fusarium oxysporumf. sp. koae) found with the disease & shown pathogenic
Star  Studies to determine disease resistance, means of spread, etc., underway
Star  Several fungal isolates collected for comparison studies


Significance:
Star  Koa (Acacia koa) is Hawaiian forests’ second most abundant native overstory tree
Star  Koa is culturally, ecologically & economically important
Star  Disease kills previously healthy trees of all ages
