Assess Importance of Fogdrip at Windward and Leeward Forest Sites on East Maui

PIERC Project Leader: Lloyd Loope, Ph.D.

Forest Sites on East Maui Objectives:
Star  How much does fog contribute to cloud forest water budgets?
Star  Do plants use fog, rain or both?
Star  Does fog recharge the deep ground-water system?
Star  What factors contribute to canopy fog-interception efficiency?

Accomplishments:
Star  Windward & leeward stations installed
Star  Data collection seamless
Star  Preliminary results evaluated

Significance:
Star  Positive collaboration with WRD
Star  Potential for restoration of degraded leeward forests, given a positive effect on hydrology
Star  Potential for contribution to understanding of “endangered” cloud forests worldwide
