Senator Murray Launches New Website

Help Reform Our Broken Health Care System

Senator Murray has launched a new website to help Washington state residents lend their voice to the effort to reform health care in America. The new site is a place where Washingtonians can share their stories about our broken health care system and where they can stay updated with the latest news on health care reform efforts.

Senator Murray believes that making meaningful reform happen this year will take more than members of Congress – or even President Obama – calling for change.  It will take Americans across Washington state and the nation standing up and demanding it. That’s why she is asking Washington state residents to add their voice to this debate by signing up and/or sharing their health care stories at her new site.

Funding Requests

An important part of my job as your U.S. Senator is to help Washington state communities and businesses get federal support for projects that will create jobs, get our economy moving and make a difference for Washington’s families.

My staff and I have taken a look at all of the project requests that have come in this year.  We put a priority on those that have broad-based local support and will create jobs and generate economic growth.

We are facing tough economic times.  Families are struggling.  So while we work to bring federal funding home, I have made it a priority to also ensure that these projects have been well vetted and that we are using taxpayer money responsibly.  That’s why I’m glad to post all of the projects that I am requesting funding for here on my Web site.  I believe that the process should be transparent and that all of you should be able to see the requests I am making as your representative in Congress.

Now, budgets are tight on the federal level as well.  So, just because I have requested funding for a project, it doesn’t mean that the money will come through.

I will continue to update this site with new requests I am making and with the projects that end up being funded.

New bill aims to link students with job skills

Federal lawmakers have introduced a new bill in Congress that would give federal grants to states to put toward linking up students with training for specific industries in need of skilled workers. U.S. Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., and Rep. John Tierney, D-Mass., sponsored the bill, called "The Providing Innovation to 21st Century Careers Act," that would help pay to provide student training.

Aerospace center may be model

Snohomish County’s Aerospace Training Institute might just be the start of something bigger. The newly unveiled plan to partner community colleges and aerospace companies was lauded as exemplary Wednesday when Sen. Patty Murray laid out a plan to create a new federal board to bolster workforce development programs for teens. If the “Promoting Innovations to 21st Century Careers” bill is successful, the federal grant program would distribute $912 million in its first year, Murray said Wednesday.

Bill would train students for local jobs

Students would be trained for jobs in their local communities under legislation introduced in the Senate on Wednesday by Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash.  Many business owners can't find skilled workers they require, and the problem of high unemployment is compounded by a steep high school dropout rate, she said. That's why she said her bill will help make high school "more relevant and more engaging" to kids and give them opportunities to learn new technical skills.
