On January 20, 2009 Greg Pace was named the Acting Chief Information Officer (CIO) for the Social Security Administration (SSA). Greg is responsible for providing executive leadership and direction in advancing the agency’s mission where information technology (IT) can add value while transforming and supporting program operations. He oversees the agency’s IT strategy, $1 billion IT budget, capital planning and investment control processes, and inter-agency e-government initiatives. Greg is also responsible for the agency’s technology security and PII policies.

In January 2005, Mr. Pace was detailed to the position of Acting Deputy Chief Information Officer, and was permanently appointed to the position in May, 2005.

Greg was appointed to the Senior Executive Service (SES) in November 1994 after successfully completing the Department of Health and Human Services' SES Candidate Development Program. His first SES assignment was to the position of Deputy Director, Office of Systems Planning and Integration. In that position, he was responsible for a broad range of IT management, strategic planning and integration activities. He and the Director were responsible for the agency's comprehensive strategic systems/IT planning process, including the development of the agency's IT budget strategy and submission. They were also responsible for the planning and evaluation of IT policies as they relate to Social Security programs.

In July 2002 Mr. Pace was reassigned to the SES position of Deputy Associate Commissioner for Enterprise Support, Architecture and Engineering. He and the Associate Commissioner were responsible for identifying the strategic IT resources needed to support agency business processes and operations and the transition processes for researching, demonstrating and implementing new technologies in response to the agency's strategic vision. They were also responsible for: managing the agency's IT architecture program; establishing enterprise IT policies; managing the agency's data base management and integration activities; and, managing the agency's multi-platform software engineering facilities.

Prior to joining the SES, Mr. Pace served in several senior level positions with the SSA including: Senior Systems Advisor to the Acting Commissioner of Social Security (COSS); Counselor to the Deputy Commissioner for Programs; voting member of the COSS Policy Council; Senior Systems Advisor for Programs; and Acting Assistant Regional Commissioner for Programs, Operations and Systems (Chicago).

Mr. Pace joined SSA as a computer specialist in 1974. He was recruited from private industry to help the agency design, construct, and deploy a national network of computers and terminals to support the implementation of the agency's Supplemental Security Income program.
