Title: Farm Worker CARE Coalition HIV Outreach and Education Program

The goal of the Farm Worker CARE Coalition HIV Outreach and Education Program is to increase the capacity of approximately 15 organizations dedicated to providing services to migrant farm workers and their families by providing them with culturally and linguistically appropriate HIV/AIDS education, referral resources and train the trainer services. These organizations are members of the Farm Worker Care Coalition (FWCC). The target minority group consists of migrant farm workers, day laborers and their families who are predominantly Latino and of Mexican origin. The partnership consists of Vista Community Clinic, California State University, San Marcus and Community Housing Works.

The project provides HIV/AIDS education, testing, counseling, referrals and train the trainer services to agencies, organization and clients. Approximately 15 health and social service agencies/organizations serving farm workers/day laborers receive training in HIV/AIDS education and referral resources. Twenty-four prevention education workshops are provided annually by Promotores to approximately 1,000 farm workers, day laborers and community members. A minimum of 15 Promotores receive HIV prevention (ABC Approach) train the trainer curriculum annually provided by the Health Educator. Three HIV education and referral workshops are conducted for FWCC staff by the project Health Educator and Promotores. Outreach is conducted at day laborer pick-up sites, agency events, adults schools, street fairs, area business, bars/clubs, churches, migrant camps, and apartment complexes to promote HIV/AIDS education. Each year one-hundred men are referred for a complete no-cost, comprehensive health exam of eyes, ears, nose, heart, lungs, as well as blood testing for STDs, HIV, and screening for diabetes and cardiovascular disease. HIV testing is provided to 400 high-risk farm workers, day laborers and low-income community members. Anyone testing positive is referred to VCC for an early intervention program. Up to100 individuals receive health assessments to ascertain HIV- risk behaviors, access to health care services, and HIV knowledge based on the ABC Approach.
