Title: Community Partnering - Black Teen HIV Prevention Project

The purpose of the Community Partnering - Black Teen HIV Prevention Project is to implement a unique theoretical behavioral change model of community-based intervention designed to reduce HIV/AIDS in the African American community while enhancing the capacity of non-traditional community-based partnerships. The project is implemented through a collaborative effort between the Institute for the Advanced Study of Black Life and Culture, CAL-PEP and Youth Uprising. The overall goal of the project is to increase the HIV/AIDS prevention capacity of minority-serving community-based organizations and help uninfected early adolescent teens initiate and/or sustain behaviors that will reduce or eliminate their risk of becoming infected with HIV and other STDs.
Project activities target youth 11-15 years-old and are designed to increase their capacity to adopt/internalize values and attitudes that will allow them to better mediate and/or eliminate the risks of self-destructive behavior. Activities include HIV and substance abuse prevention training in group settings and dissemination of prevention information and materials. Two gender specific focus groups and one community forum are conducted each year that focus on: HIV/AIDS knowledge; strategies to combat the spread of HIV/AIDS in young people; and the validity/acceptability of ABC Approach prevention strategies. Weekly, one-hour workshops are conducted for a group of 50 youth for 16 consecutive weeks. The 50 youth also participate in two formulated Black Teen HIV Prevention Teams receiving training in street play, spoken word event, and public service announcement each year. The training is shared with 25 other youth, who in turn, are asked to hold HIV/AIDS conversations with five different youth, who are asked to share with five additional youth.
