HOYER APPLAUDS SIGNING OF ANACOSTIA WATERFRONT CORPORATION LEGISLATION

WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer, a congressional champion for redeveloping the Anacostia Waterfront, issued the following statement on the signing of the Anacostia Waterfront Corporation (AWC) Legislation today:

“I congratulate Mayor Williams and the DC Council for creating the Anacostia Waterfront Corporation.

“The Anacostia Waterfront Corporation, an independent instrumentality of the District of Columbia that will oversee and direct the 25-year plan to redevelop the lands adjacent to the Anacostia River and clean up the river, is an historic and bold step in transforming an area that has been neglected for far too long.

“It is my hope and expectation that the new AWC will use its powers to revitalize all the parcels of land under its supervision, including the South Capitol Corridor, the gateway to the Nation’s capital.  The Federal government, and particularly the U.S. Congress, has an interest in ensuring that redevelopment of South Capitol Street is executed in a manner that recognizes the special place occupied by the U.S. Capitol building.  I am confident that the new AWC will provide the leadership and vision to make the South Capitol Corridor a place both District residents and all Americans visiting Washington, DC can be proud of.

“In the months ahead, I will reach out to District and Federal officials to determine the appropriate complementary role the Federal government can play in making sure the AWC receives appropriate assistance from the federal government to ensure this ambitious and historic project is a success.”
