Hoyer Introduces Legislation to Improve Efficiency & Reliability of Energy Transmission

WASHINGTON, DC – Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (D-MD) introduced a set of bills today aimed at expanding the production and installation of superconducting and other advanced electric transmission cables to improve efficiency in the transmission of power, increase the reliability of the power grid, and assist in the deployment of renewables nationwide. A summary of the bills – the Advanced Cable Deployment Authorization Act of 2009 (H.R. 2347) and the Financing Advanced & Superconducting Transmission Act of 2009 (H.R. 2348) – can be found here.

“As we look to update our energy infrastructure, as well as pursue the development of alternative energy sources, it is important to ensure we can transmit energy efficiently and reliably throughout the country. The technology exists to update our transmission infrastructure, but the challenge is in making those technologies cost competitive with the copper wires we have historically relied upon. This legislation addresses that by encouraging the development and deployment of high-tech transmission lines to deliver energy more efficiently and securely, and at a lower cost to consumers and the environment.”
