Environmental Response Management Application (ERMA) is a Web-based GIS tool designed to assist emergency responders and environmental resource managers who deal with incidents (such as oil spills or hurricanes) that may adversely impact the environment. ERMA integrates many types of spatial data sets into a single map interface, which helps facilitate communication and coordination among responders and stakeholders.

You can use ERMA to:

  • Plot new data on the map, such as overflight areas, ship traffic, marine debris GPS survey data, and incident command areas.
  • Display a variety of existing data on the map, including ESI shoreline classifications and resources at risk, spill response resources, and contaminated areas.
  • Display real-time data on the map, including weather forecasts and tidal information from observational buoys.
  • Choose the basemap view, such as NOAA navigational charts, raster images, and Google's Map, Satellite, or Hybrid views.
  • Provide documents (such as photo and site surveys) and links to Web sites.

Due to the detailed resolution of the data included in ERMA and data management needs, ERMA site are generally developed for a specific to a single geographic region. For example, the ERMA demo project was created for Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and the development team is now working on Caribbean and Puget Sound ERMAs. However, a national version of ERMA for a subset of data layer is being developed in 2009.  Click on the ERMA Demo Site link at the bottom of the page to see firsthand how the ERMA project works.

Quickly change the map view by turning layers on/off (the list of available layers is displayed to the right of the map). You can further customize the map by choosing the basemap and by adding your own data objects to the map.

The development of ERMA was facilitated and funded by the Coastal Response Research Center, which is a partnership between the University of New Hampshire and NOAA's Office of Response and Restoration. Additionally, each geographically-specific ERMA product is the result of collaboration from many other partners.
