AT THE END OF THE DAY, HOUSE VOTES FOR SENATE CHILD TAX CREDIT BILL

House Votes to Tell Conference Committee to Adopt Senate Bill

WASHINGTON – House Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today following the House vote on the “motion to instruct conferees” (a non-binding motion that tells House members of the House-Senate conference committee how to work out differences between House and Senate bills) on the child tax credit bill.  The motion instructed House conferees to report out the Senate bill, effectively adopting the Democratic position of dropping the House bill in favor of the Senate bill:

“Tonight’s vote on the motion to instruct conferees, the final vote of the day on the child tax credit bill, clearly demonstrated that the majority of the House of Representatives supported the Senate bill over the House Republican leadership bill.  The House Republican leadership knew that and that is why they rigged the rules to ensure that the will of the majority could not prevail.

“House Republican leaders tried to issue a death sentence for the expansion of the child tax credit today.  But, the vote on the motion to instruct conferees proved that Democrats and like-minded Republicans will continue to fight for a bill that accelerates the child tax credit increase for 6.5 million working and military families, including 12 million children and that could be enacted into law immediately.”
