In 2010 the National Archives will peel back 150 years of accumulated analysis, synthesis, and punditry to reveal a Civil War that is little-known and even more rarely displayed. DISCOVERING THE CIVIL WAR will give visitors the chance to walk in the shoes of researchers, unlock secrets, solve mysteries, and uncover unexpected events in our records. The exhibit combines great original treasures and engaging touch-screen interactives in a physical environment inspired by 21st-century research rooms. Letters, diaries, photos, maps, petitions, receipts, patents, amendments, and proclamations all become powerful tools to let visitors take a fresh look at a conflict that still touches our lives.
The Center for the National Archives Experience and the Foundation for the National Archives are proud to announce this major exhibit, which will break the boundaries of our conventional understanding of the scope of the war and its contemporary impact. After premiering in the Lawrence F. O'Brien Gallery in Washington, DC, DISCOVERING THE CIVIL WAR will embark upon a major, multi-city national tour beginning in 2011.

The Foundation for the National Archives, with help from private supporters like you, will enable the design, fabrication, and tour of the innovative framework and dynamic interactives which will invite Americans from coast to coast to use these records to "discover" the Civil War.
