Bad Coke, and I'm Not Talking Soft Drinks

Tuesday January 13, 2009
There's bad cocaine in the Northwest, and since drugs (and people) have a way a traveling, I wanted all my readers to be aware--especially since, so far, this batch has made at least 10 people ill. This news is making its way through the public health circles and is on the Internet, but I first learned of it through About.com's Addictions site.

Why do I think this is important news for a hepatitis site? Injection drug use is a risk factor for hepatitis B and hepatitis C, which means that IV drug users have an increased chance of being exposed to hepatitis viruses. Of course, it's an ugly myth that all people with hepatitis are drug users. Unfortunately, this myth is one of the reasons for the stigma surrounding viral hepatitis.

News of bad drugs provides an excellent opportunity to review some of the risk factors for viral hepatitis and how we can protect ourselves from exposure. With all the myths and misinformation, let's first review what you can do! Here are Ten Things That Won't Transmit Hepatitis. Without a doubt, some people will be at risk for hepatitis C exposure and they can learn about how to protect themselves from infection. Finally, vaccination is key to effective prevention. Here is a list of people most at-risk for hepatitis B infection.

Gregg Allman All Better

Thursday January 8, 2009
He may not be cured, but he has recovered enough to play ten shows with the Allman Brothers Band. Readers may recall I wrote about this back in March when the group canceled their future concerts because Mr. Allman was receiving treatment for hepatitis C.

It's great to know that Mr. Allman is back with his band. If you're interested in seeing them live, they'll be at New York's Beacon Theater in March 2009.

Happy New Year!

Wednesday December 31, 2008
It's New Year's Eve and I hope you're ready to welcome in 2009. This has been an exciting year for people interested in hepatitis. We've had some interesting scientific advances (like this one and don't forget about this one), but we've also had some very disturbing setbacks. I hope we don't see in 2009 something like this or especially something like this. While we hope for the best, I'm excited about bringing you another year of news and information about hepatitis in its many forms. Have fun, stay safe and I hope to see you in the forums.
