Assessment Tool
This downloadable Excel spreadsheet, developed by Boston
University, uses recent data from the Framingham Heart Study to estimate
10-year risk for "hard" coronary heart disease outcomes (myocardial infarction
and coronary death) in adults who do not have heart disease or diabetes.
Determining 10-year (short term) risk for developing CHD is
carried out using Framingham risk scoring. The risk factors included in the
Framingham calculation are age, total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, systolic
blood pressure, treatment for hypertension, and cigarette smoking. Because of a
larger database, Framingham estimates are more robust for total cholesterol
than for LDL cholesterol. Note, however, that LDL cholesterol remains the
primary target of therapy.
It is recommended that the clinician be thoroughly familiar
with the ATP III Guidelines prior to using this spreadsheet tool in patient
care. The

Instructions for downloading and using the 10-year risk
assessment spreadsheet:
- Download the self-extracting zip file
RISK.EXE.
- For MAC OS users download the BinHex
encoded self-extracting archive (Stuffit) RISK.SEA.HQX.
- When prompted, select the folder on your computer that you
want to save the self-extracting file to.
- Double click on the self-extracting file after it is saved to
your computer. It will automatically extract Excel 95 and Excel 2000 versions
of the spreadsheet and place them in the same folder as the self-extracting
file.
- You must have a recent version of Excel or a comparable
spreadsheet application that can import an Excel 95 or 2000 format file.
- NOTE: You may receive a warning message that the spreadsheet
you are opening contains macros and that some macros may contain harmful
viruses. This spreadsheet has been tested and does not contain any macro
viruses. The macros it contains are not required to use the risk assessment
calculator. Therefore you may choose to enable or disable the macros.
- Launch Excel (or a compatible spreadsheet application) and
open the appropriate version of the spreadsheet.
- Enter values for all risk factors (i.e., gender, age, total
cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, Systolic Blood Pressure, etc.) and the
spreadsheet will provide a risk assessment score based on the risk factors
entered.
