Reid Secures Extension of Cash for Clunkers Program

August 6, 2009

Washington, D.C.Nevada Senator Harry Reid today made the following statement after leading the U.S. Senate in passing additional funding for the Cash for Clunkers program.

“Cash for Clunkers is very popular in Nevada and is a great example of how a public-private partnership benefits consumers and businesses.  Thanks to this program, auto sales in Nevada and around the country have drastically increased.  In fact, one Reno car dealership was reported to have set a new car sales record of 24 in just one day.

“Not only does this program give a much needed jolt to Nevada’s economy, it continues our commitment to renewable energy and greater awareness of environmental impact.  Cash for Clunkers has already generated a 61% increase in vehicle fuel economy and is well worth further investment.

“Beyond the wise investment in our domestic auto industry, this program will stimulate other sectors of the auto supply chain like mechanics and auto parts manufacturers without adding to the deficit.  By increasing sales we are bringing more revenue to the state and creating jobs for those who build and sell them.

“Cash for Clunkers is the kind of sound, innovative program that helps spur Americans’ confidence in our continuing economic recovery.”
