RECYCLED PLASTIC BRIDGE AT FORT BRAGG STANDS UP TO M-1 TANK TRAFFIC   IN THE NEWS

An innovative thermoplastic composite bridge at Fort Bragg, N.C., is the first known structure of its kind to support military equipment loads exceeding 70 tons. On June 11, an M-1 tank safely crossed the newly built bridge, which is made from some 85,000 pounds of recycled plastics.

"The first crossing was greeted with a big sigh of relief from some of us and a hardy round of applause from about 30 people in attendance," said Richard Lampo, materials engineer with ERDC-CERL who led the project. The tank's foray across the bridge marked the completion of load testing and safety validation for the new structure, which was completed in May. More...

Proper Maintenance Key to No-Water Urinal Success
Solicitations for Military Construction and major repair projects starting with fiscal year (FY) 2010 must include language to implement the Army Standard for Non-Water Using Urinals. The Installation Management Command will soon issue a NETCALL directing all garrisons to implement the standard. No-water urinals will save water in the millions of gallons each year at military installations. Their use will help the Army comply with Executive Order (EO) 13423, "Strengthening Federal Environmental, Energy, and Transportation Management" (Jan. 26, 2007). This EO requires federal agencies to reduce water consumption through life-cycle, cost-effective measures by 2 percent each year from their 2007 baseline, or 16 percent by the end of FY15. More...

Remote Monitoring Can Send Early Warning of Bridge Defects
Steel truss bridges on DoD installations can harbor the same failure potential as the I-35W bridge in Minneapolis, Minn., which collapsed on August 1, 2007, during rush hour traffic. Defects that are hidden or unnoticed during inspections can lead to catastrophic failure. For DoD, in addition to possible human tragedy, loss of a bridge can impact the mission. More...

PWTBs: Rich Source of Practical Information for Environmental & Facility Managers
The Army Corps of Engineers publishes Public Works Technical Bulletins (PWTBs) that translate the results of research and development into useful, hands-on guidance for military installation directors of public works. Need to know how to dispose of used fluorescent light bulbs? Wondering what type of detergent is best for a washrack? Thinking about deconstruction as an alternative to smash-and-trash? It's all here on the Whole Building Design Guide website.
